Institutional care of mentally disabled seniors

Population is aging. Along with increase in dementia and other old-age related conditions new effective services and residential facilities will become a necessity in following years. A need for institutional care rises with age and severity of dementia. Currently, there is deficiency of services providing this care and services are limited by resource availability. A demented person in institutional care quality of life requires stable safe environment, sufficient staff and frequent contact by family. Special dementia and related conditions care units were incorporated into residential care facilities for elderly designed for this special group of residents. The aim of the work is to review and evaluate a quality of care at the special units for elderly with dementia and similar mental conditions is provided within two residential homes in České Budějovice. Both surveyed units were found understaffed and some technical imperfections were found due to limited budgets but under these restrictive conditions both units mostly met requirements for elderly with dementia quality of care.
